Evidence-based policy in action: CEBaP presents SUPPLY findings at EDQM conference

20/01/25

On January 14-15, CEBaP participated in the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare (EDQM) Blood Conference in Strasbourg, France. It was both an honour and a pleasure to present the results of the SUPPLY project, which focuses on strengthening voluntary non-remunerated plasma collection capacity in Europe, regarding the impact of plasmapheresis frequency on donor health.

Based on the results of our scoping review and systematic reviews, we recommended to:

  • Limit plasma donations to two per month until the safety of higher frequencies is proven;
  • Regularly monitor donors’ IgG levels to prevent extremely low levels with a potential negative health impact (<6 g/L);
  • Urgently launch prospective studies to understand the health effects of varying donation frequencies.

This work exemplifies evidence-based policy-making in action! Our SUPPLY recommendations on plasmapheresis frequency and IgG monitoring will feature in the 2025 EDQM Blood Guide, scheduled for release this spring.
