International Consensus Conference on Patient Blood Management

Last week, we participated in a successful International Consensus Conference on Patient Blood Management (PBM) (Frankfurt, Germany), organized by an international consortium (EBA, ISBT, AABB, DGTI, SFTS and SIMTI). Thanks to an extensive multidisciplinary expert group and evidence-based methodology (GRADE approach), we were able to formulate evidence-based recommendations on 1) the definition, diagnosis and treatment of preoperative anaemia, 2) the use of more restrictive RBC transfusion triggers and 3) how to implement PBM programs. The conclusions and conference proceedings will be disseminated via peer-review publications.
